Messaging

There are a number of different ways to communicate between students, instructors, guardians, and owners, depending on which account you have and which classes you are a part of. The messaging system can generally be divided into two different categories – class messaging and direct messaging.

Class messaging is the chat that takes place between all participants of a class. This includes enrolled students, guardians of enrolled students, instructors, and school owners.

Direct messaging is one-on-one communication between two different users, such as an instructor and a student, or an owner and a guardian. If a direct message is sent to a student, their guardian will also be included in the conversation and be able to participate. This feature is intended to allow school staff to initiate communication, so guardians and students aren’t able to directly message other users.

You can view all current and past chats and conversations by opening the side navigation and selecting Messages, regardless of which account you are using.

Starting a chat with the class roster

Here’s how you start a chat with a class:

• Head to the class in question.
• Click Roster.
• Under Tools, click Message Roster
• From here type your message into the text box, and hit enter to send. The message will be sent to everyone who is currently enrolled in that class, the owner of the school, as well as the guardians of enrolled students.

You’ll be notified of new messages in a class stream when the class messaging icon has a small number above it.

Starting a direct chat with a user

As an instructor or school owner, you can initiate direct chats with any other users.

To chat directly with a student:

• Head to the class.
• Click Roster from the top navigation.
• Under Tools, click Message Student.
• Any chat started with a student will automatically include their guardians.

You can also do it the following way:

• Using the side navigation, click School.
• Click Users from the top navigation.
• Click Students
• Select the student.
• Click Message Student.

To chat directly with a guardian:

• Using the side navigation, click School.
• Click Users from the top navigation.
• Click Guardians
• Select the guardian.
• Click Message Guardian.

To chat directly with a member of staff:

• Using the side navigation, click School.
• Click Users from the top navigation.
• Click Staff
• Select the staff member.
• Click Message Staff.
